Brief introduction to two methods for preparing Cordierite

Cordierite ceramic was prepared using talc and clay as the main reactants, adding an appropriate amount of alumina or magnesia chemical raw materials, mixing them evenly, and sintering at 1390-1400°C.

Common high-temperature solid-phase synthesis methods include the following two processes:

  1) High-purity chemical raw materials (MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2) are used for high-temperature synthesis of Cordierite. In order to obtain Cordierite refractory materials with high Cordierite content and a certain porosity, researchers used X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermal expansion instruments to study the effects of adding CeO2 on the phase composition and properties of Cordierite ceramics prepared from oxide powders (MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2), and analyzed the mechanism of CeO2 during the sintering process. The advantages of this process are high purity of the synthesized product, while the disadvantages are high process cost and high reaction temperature.

  2) Talc, clay, and other natural raw materials are used as the main reactants, with an appropriate amount of alumina or magnesia chemical raw materials added, mixed evenly, and sintered at 1390-1400°C to prepare Cordierite ceramics. The advantages of this method are that some of the reaction raw materials are natural raw materials, and the sources of raw materials are relatively wide; the disadvantages are that the product purity is not high, and some high-purity Mg0, Al203, and SiO2 chemical raw materials need to be introduced into the reaction raw materials, and the cost needs to be further reduced.
